The research you're probably thinking of was reported by

Maclean, M., Bryant, P., and Bradley, L. (1987) Rhymes, nursery
rhymes, and reading in early childhood. Merrill-Palmer Quarterly,
33 (3), pp.255-281.

Implications of this research for family literacy were touched on
in Hannon, P. (1995) Literacy, Home and School. London: Falmer
Press.

Good luck,

Peter Hannon
