Welcome to Region 5
Welcome to Region 5 ODOT to Host N Ontario Interchange Completion Celebration on October 14
ONTARIO, Ore - On October 14th at 10 a.m. Mountain Time (9 a.m. Pacific Time) the Oregon Department of Transportation will hold a completion celebration event for the North Ontario Interchange Project. The event will be held at the Ontario State Park / Recreation Site located adjacent to the new Interstate 84 interchange at Exit 374. Local residents, project stakeholders and other interested parties are encouraged to attend and share in the celebration that will include speeches by project partners, entertainment from the Ontario High School Band, a ribbon cutting ceremony and light refreshments.

The two-year interchange project received $10 million in Oregon Transportation Investment Act (OTIA) funds and is the final piece to a set of local projects identified over a decade ago by the Ontario Transportation Solution Project team. This group of local stakeholder first met in 1997 to map out some of the most critical transportation challenges in Ontario. Other projects identified by the group and completed over the past several years include the connection of SW 4th Street to SE 2nd Street with a new bridge over the Union Pacific RR, a new traffic signal controlled intersection at SW 18th Avenue and Oregon Highway 201, and the Tony Yturri Memorial Beltline. With the replacement of the North Ontario Interchange, Oregon Highway 201 is now directly connected to the Yturri Beltline. The combined projects have improved safety, provided alternative routes in and around the city of Ontario and created a smoother, more efficient transportation system for farm to market transport and all other traffic.

The Ontario State Park / Recreation Site is located along Oregon Highway 201 next to I-84 Exit 374. There is easy access to parking, picnic tables and restroom facilities. The event will take place at the east end of the park.

I-84 Rolling Slowdowns south-east of Baker City
Burnt River Canyon
Motorists may experience temporary slowdowns on Interstate 84 over the next couple months 30 miles southeast of Baker City. ODOT contractors will occasionally use pilot cars to slow traffic to 30 miles-per-hour near mile point 336 to accommodate excavation and blasting alongside the freeway. The slow downs create a window of time when no cars will be in the area so that blasting operations can be safely performed. The work is part of a project that includes realigning two sharp corners and improving safety along the 12-mile stretch of winding freeway known as Burnt River Canyon.

ODOT estimates a half-dozen rolling slow downs per week could take place over the next couple months, but that no more than two are expected in any one 24-hour period. Travelers are advised to watch for traffic control signs and pay extra attention when driving through this and all construction work zones.
Freeway on-ramp at Rye Valley interchange to close for construction
Contractors for the Oregon Department of Transportation will close the eastbound Interstate 84 on-ramp at the Rye Valley interchange (Exit 340) on Wednesday, June 18 for bridge replacement work. The ramp will remain closed until October.

Signs will direct motorists on Dixie Creek Road and Rye Valley Lane headed to eastbound I-84 to drive west on I-84 for two miles, take Exit 338 (Lookout Mountain Road), cross under I-84, then proceed eastbound on I-84.

From July to September, crews will occasionally reduce I-84 traffic near the interchange to one lane in each direction. The temporary lane closures will allow workers to repair the freeway bridge over the Burnt River, east of the Exit 340 overpass.

Deadman's Pass Rest Area Closed for Remodel
PENDLETON, OR - The Deadman's Pass Safety Rest Area located along Interstate 84 near mile point 228, about 20 miles east of Pendleton, will be closed for remodeling work over the next month and a half. The Oregon Department of Transportation will be shutting down the facility starting Monday for a complete face lift, with new tile, stalls, fixtures and a new roof. The exit ramp to the rest area will remain open as it provides access to property beyond the rest area. Motorists are advised to use facilities in Pendleton or La Grande before heading over the mountain.

The Oregon Department of Transportation realized this will be an inconvenience to travelers and will be working with the remodeling contractor to ensure the facility is open to the public as soon as possible.
