Geotechnical engineering is the branch of civil engineering that deals with soil, rock, and underground water, and their relation to the design, construction, and operation of engineering projects. Engineering Geology is the study of the distribution and relevance of earth materials as they relate to planning, location, design, construction, and maintenance of engineering projects. Geotechnical Engineers and Engineering Geologists work in coordination to interpret geologic conditions and design projects. The Geotechnical Engineers and Engineering Geologists in this section are responsible for statewide practices, standards, training, expertise, and asset management for the geotechnical and geology disciplines within ODOT. The Geotechnical Engineers and Engineering Geologists in the Region Tech Centers actively practice those disciplines through the design of transportation projects.
