Description: Collection of 19th century American fiction, including works by well known writers such as Louisa May Alcott, Mark Twain, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Herman Melville, and Harriet Beecher Stowe, along with a great many forgotten authors, whose works may have been very popular in their own time. Contains over 2,887 volumes by 1,450 authors in adult fiction, including "novels, novelettes, romances, short stories, tall tales, tract-like tales, allegories, and fictitious biographies and travels, in prose." Based on Lyle Wright's bibliography American Fiction, 1851-1875 , considered the most comprehensive bibliography of American adult fiction of the 18th and 19th centuries.
