60)
We all
hear about farmers who get caught underneath their combine
or in the intake area. As tragic as these accidents may seem,
you have a greater risk of being hurt by falling off your
combine.
Consider
this: combines are 12 to 14 feet off the ground, and operator's
platforms are at least 6 feet up. You probably mount and dismount
your machine dozens of times a day, increasing your risk of
a fall.
Beware
of metal ladders and platforms. Under normal conditions, they
can be slippery. They become treacherous when covered with
grain, mud, rain, snow, or ice.
Keep
those areas free of tools or other objects. Make sure platforms
and ladders are clean. Wear shoes with non-slip soles. And
understand that fatigue, stress, drugs or alcohol can affect
your stability.
Prepare
to be safe this harvest season.
