AUTHOR ABSTRACT
In Austria
each year five to ten people die because of fermentation gases
in silos. This is why the BVPA-Wiselburg was instructed by
the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry to research into
safety equipment for silos to reduce accidents. Measurements
of the composition and concentration of gases during the filling
or opening of more than 70 different silos were made. Also,
simulation experiments were performed to gain knowledge of
the influence of the cover or hatch position, the contents
of the silo and the outside wind conditions on the out-flow
of the gas. The effects of technical devices such as blowers,
flaps, etc. to prevent accidents were studied and encouraging
results were found.
