CLEVELAND, TEXAS MAN SENTENCED FOR FEDERAL FIREARMS VIOLATIONS

(Beaumont, TX)  United States Attorney Becky Gregory announced today that a 50 year old Cleveland, Texas man has sentenced for federal firearms violations in the Eastern District of Texas.

 
            LOUIS LEON WALTERS was sentenced today during an appearance before United States District Judge Thad Heartfield to a 120 month term of imprisonment.

       
            According to information presented in Court, in April, 2005, acting on a tip, police officers traveled to Walters' residence, which was located in a mobile home park in Cleveland, Texas.  The officers noticed upon their arrival that there was surveillance camera posted at the front of the residence.  As they announced their arrival, the officers distinctly heard the sound of running inside.  When Walters came outside, he gave officers a false name, and denied possessing a weapon.  However, during a brief frisk of Walters' person, a routine procedure for officers' safety, the police officers found a loaded pistol in Walters' pocket.  Walters was subsequently arrested when officers learned he had several outstanding warrants.  Officers obtained a search warrant for the residence, and during this search, officers found a second firearm, as well as liquid containing a detectable amount of methamphetamine, chemicals, and items consistent with the manufacture of methamphetamine.  Walters, who was previously convicted of two felonies in state court, is precluded from possessing a firearm. 

            Walters is still facing charges in state court related to the methamphetamine, the chemicals, and the items related to the manufacture of methamphetamine.

 
            This case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), the Cleveland Police Department, Chambers/Liberty County Narcotics Task Force, Texas Department of Public Safety Crime Laboratory, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Forensic Laboratory and the United States Marshals Service.  The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Randall Fluke.
