TEXAS MAN SENTENCED FOR COUNTERFEIT $20

TEXARKANA, TX – United States Attorney Rebecca A. Gregory announced today that a 33-year-old Texarkana, Texas man has been sentenced to 41 months in federal prison for a counterfeit scheme in the Eastern District of Texas. 

            CHARLES KEVIN CLAYTON pleaded guilty on May 8, 2008 to Counterfeiting and Forging Obligations or Securities of the United States and was sentenced today by United States District Judge David Folsom.

            According to information presented in court, Clayton was arrested after trying to pass a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill at a Bowie County business.  At his plea hearing on May 8, Clayton admitted to Judge Folsom that he was broke, and he needed money, so he counterfeited the $20 note.  He also admitted that he had previously passed other counterfeit dollars with the intent to defraud others.  Clayton was indicted by a federal grand jury on February 5, 2008.

            This case was investigated by the United States Secret Service and the Bowie County Sheriff's Office and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Denise Simpson.
