How does a property become a National Historic Landmark? Historic places that meet certain criteria may be nominated to become National Historic Landmarks. The National Park Service fosters the preparation of individual nominations and oversees theme studies that identify groups of potential landmarks. Completed nominations are reviewed by the National Park System Advisory Board, which makes recommendations for designation to the Secretary of the Interior. Designation as a National Historic Landmark automatically places a property in the National Register of Historic Places, if it is not already so listed. |
