The Law Library of the Library of Congress and the American Bar Association Division for Public Education commemorated Law Day with a panel discussion on "Perspectives on Childhood and the Law." Law Librarian of Congress Rubens Medina and ABA President Karen J. Mathis participated in the program by making opening remarks. John Milewski served as moderator for the panel discussion, which explored several legal questions including ways in which legal definitions of childhood and cultural values affect our public policies and laws.
Speaker Biography: John Milewski is a veteran broadcast journalist with extensive experience in moderating and interviewing, producing public affairs television programming and documentaries, and working with educators from around the world to create educational opportunities for students and adults. For 20 years he served as host/moderator, executive producer and managing educator of Close Up on C-SPAN, one of the longest running public policy discussion programs in cable television history. He has covered everything from presidential elections and space shuttle launches to the fall of the Berlin Wall. In addition to his television work, Milewski is an instructor for Penn State University, teaching a course on politics and media.
Speaker Biography: Karen J. Mathis is president of the American Bar Association and partner in the Denver office of McElroy, Deutsch, Mulvaney & Carpenter. Mathis is the third woman to serve as an ABA president, and the first president from Colorado. She has served as a member of the House of Delegates since 1982 and has long been an advocate for youth, serving on the Colorado Commission on Child Care and as a member of the Mile Hi Council of Girl Scouts. Mathis earned her law degree from the University of Colorado School of Law in 1975 and her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Denver in 1972, cum laude.
Speaker Biography: Rubens Medina is the 21st Law Librarian of Congress, having been appointed to the position in 1994 after serving as Chief of the Hispanic Law Division since 1971. He holds a law degree from the National University of Asunci??n, Paraguay, and a Ph.D. in Law and Sociology from the University of Wisconsin. Medina also serves as Chair of the Executive Council of the Global Legal Information Network (GLIN), an international cooperative information system developed and maintained by the Law Library.
Speaker Biography: Antoinette Sedillo Lopez is associate dean for Clinical Affairs and professor of Law, University of New Mexico School of Law. She teaches a broad range of courses including Bioethics, Ethics, Family Law, and International and Comparative Family Law. Sedillo Lopez joined the UNM faculty in 1986 and in 2001 became director of the law school's clinical programs. Prior to teaching at UNM, she was an associate at Modrall, Sperling, Roehl, Harris & Sisk. A member of the District of Columbia and New Mexico bars, Sedillo Lopez received a B.U.S. from the University of New Mexico and J.D. from the UNCLO School of Law.
Speaker Biography: Stephen J. Morse is the Ferdinand Wakeman Hubbell Professor of Law and professor of Psychology and Law in Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. He is a widely recognized expert in criminal and mental health law and has served as a trustee for the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law, a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the International Journal of Law and Psychiatry, and expert consultant to the President???s Council on Bioethics. Morse received an A.B. in History and Philosophy from Tufts University and, J.S. from Harvard La School as well as an Ed.M. and Ph.D. in Psychology and Social Relations from Harvard.
Speaker Biography: Karen Pittman is executive director of the Forum for Youth Investment, which she co-founded in 1998, and president of Impact Strategies Inc. A sociologist and recognized leader in youth development, Pittman has focused on starting organizations and initiatives that promote youth development. She has held positions at the Urban Institute, Children???s Defense Fund, Academy of Educational Development, and International Youth Foundation where she took a leave of absence to work with Gen. Colin Powell to create America???s Promise: The Alliance for Youth. A widely published author, Pittman earned a Master???s degree in Sociology from the University of Chicago and B.A. in Sociology from Oberlin College.
Speaker Biography: David Young was appointed Judge, State of Maryland Circuit Court for Baltimore by Gov. Parris Glendening in 1996. He also has been an adjunct professor at the University of Baltimore School of Law. Active in civic affairs and professional organizations, he has served on numerous boards and is one of the founders of the Second Generation Foundation established to provide financial assistance to minority college students. Young received a B.A. in Psychology and Sociology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, a J.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law and a Master of Divinity degree by Virginia Union University.
Speaker Biography: Michael Zuckerman is professor of History, University of Pennsylvania, where he has been teaching since 1967. One of his most recent projects was to edit and write the epilogue to "Beyond the Century of the Child: Cultural History and Development Psychology," a collaboration of historians and psychologists on the history of childhood from the Middle Ages to the new millennium. He has served on the Board of Consultants for the PBS "History Detectives" series and as consulting historian for a video series on the American Revolution and on American heroes. Zuckerman received his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and Ph.D. from Harvard University in American Studies.
