The Great Egg Harbor Wild & Scenic River

Designated: October 27, 1992

Location: The 129-mile designated river corridor meanders through 12 municipalities and four counties in southern New Jersey on its way to the Great Egg Harbor Bay.

Outstanding Resources: Home to several threatened and endangered species. Resting, feeding and breeding areas for waterfowl. Rich history and scenic vistas.

Management Approach: The Great Egg Harbor River Council was created to work with community members and the National Park Service in managing the Great Egg Harbor River.

Overview: The beautiful Pinelands National Reserve is home to approximately 99 percent of the eligible waterways and adjacent lands designated as the Great Egg Harbor River corridor. Within this corridor, thirty miles of relativley undisturbed waterways offer prime spawning areas for the anadromous fish which feed the growing bald eagle and osprey populations. Many threatened and endangered species, including Swamp Pink, Knieskern's beaked-rush, and the Bog Turtle also thrive in the forests and marshes.

The region's history is as vibrant as its flora and fauna. Evidence of Lenape Indian villages - established long before the arrival of Europeans in the early 1700s - can still be found. And remnants of structures dating back to the Revolutionary War, including sawmills, glass factories, and brick and tile works, are also visible in the corridor.
