Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General In 2000, for the first time the Surgeon General issued a report focused on the oral health of Americans. The report indicates that while there have been great improvements in oral health during this last century, there are still too many suffering from preventable diseases. Highlights of the report include the disparities in oral health between socio-economic classes and ethnic groups. "Decay is the single most common chronic childhood disease - 5 times more common than asthma and 7 times more common than hay fever." Emphasized is the belief that oral health is an important component of overall health.
