Targeted Initiatives

WasteWise has several targeted initiatives to provide better service to our members. Focusing on specific materials or industry sectors, these challenges and campaigns provide a fresh look at waste reduction.

WasteWise Challenge

The WasteWise Challenge helps members expand existing waste reduction programs and adopt new, proven strategies. Each challenge focuses on a specific material or product type.

By pledging to the challenge, WasteWise members can receive assistance to implement waste reduction activities targeting a specific material or product type and potentially earn recognition as an environmental leader. For each challenge, EPA recognizes a Challenge Member of the Year.

Only WasteWise Members can participate in the WasteWise Challenge. Learn how to join WasteWise or contact the WasteWise Helpline at (800) EPA-WISE or WasteWise@icfi.com.

Resource Conservation Challenge (RCC)

WasteWise is an integral part of the Resource Conservation Challenge (RCC). The RCC focuses on the following key WasteWise waste streams.

Organic Materials
Recycling organic materials, such as food scraps and yard trimmings, can significantly reduce the amount of solid waste disposed of in landfills or incinerators. All organizations can participate in recycling and recovery programs for organic materials. In 2003, WasteWise Partners recycled nearly 127,800 tons of organics. EPA's Organic Materials Web site provides more information about organic materials.

Paper
Paper and paperboard products constitute the largest portion of municipal solid waste (MSW). Paper and paperboard products include everyday items such as newspapers, office papers, books, magazines, cardboard boxes, mail, and telephone directories.

Primary Packaging/Containers
EPA is focusing on increasing recycling of packaging waste such as paper folding cartons (e.g., detergent boxes), wood packaging, polymer wraps/films (used, for example, to secure loads to pallets in transport packaging), and shipping containers (e.g., wax corrugated cardboard, pallets). In addition, EPA is targeting all beverage containers.

Secondary Materials

EPA is focusing on beneficial use for three secondary materials: coal combustion products (CCPs), foundry sand, and construction and demolition debris.
