Designing and directing this project has been one of the most rewarding and challenging experiences of my professional life. When I don't work on the AMI project I coordinate other aspects the New England Literacy Resource Center's work out of World Education in Boston. That includes publishing The Change Agent newspaper on integrating civic participation and social justice related issues in adult education. In response to Marie Kennedy's inquiry about the AMI Sourcebook, we are currently in the second phase of our project. Nine teachers from three states have been selected to pilot the Sourcebook in instruction through December 99. We are also seeking individuals, especially ABE, GED or ESOL teachers who would be willing to review the Sourcebook. The Sourcebook, Vol. 1 includes: Introduction to MI theory and practice, chapters that highlight key issues our teachers faced when applying MI theory, a lessons section -all from our teachers' classrooms, and a section on our emerging themes to date across all the classrooms. Volume 2 includes our teachers' research reports and will not go through a formal review process. We are looking for adult education practitioners, the ultimate target audience for the Sourcebook, to help us improve the Sourcebook for its final publication early next year. The main goal of the Sourcebook is to help catalyze MI-informed practices in adult (ABE, GED, ESOL) learning settings. We are asking people to review it with that in mind. Reviewing would involve reading through the Sourcebook, considering and perhaps even using it in terms of an adult teaching context, and completing a feedback form. We're also asking for a page or so of narrative comments. In exchange you would receive the copy of both volumes of the Sourcebook, as well as a complementary copy of the final version. The Sourcebook is not being disseminated to other peole at this time. Please contact me if you are interested in being a reviewer. Thanks. Also, To anyone who uses play-dough: Has anyone ever used play-dough in a parent education setting (beyond showing parents how to teach and play with it with their children?) I was struck by all the discussion in the last FOB issue around play-dough in the adult classroom. I often let people "just play" with play-dough in classroom while we are discussing . . . but perhaps I could be doing more? Thanks, Mary Kennedy Family & Youth Services Bureau of Porter County, Inc.
