Hi there from NH - the state that may just come into the 21st century and finally pay for an adequate and equal education for all of the children in its state! As to the adults in need, that is yet another question...

As to this network - I am the director of a small, but growing adult basic education program based in Portsmouth, NH (on the Atlantic seacoast) with ABE/GED clasess and an ESL class. We are connected into a community action agency (non-profit anti-poverty organization created out of Johnson's War on Poverty) and have run this particular program for 2.5 years now.

Our needs?? Anything and everything that can be used with success in classroom setting for curriculum with both populations (native and non-native). I would be particularly interested in those activities that build the sense of community within the class, especially the ABE/GED students who seem less cohesive or even willing to be cohesive. Also, those activities/curriculumn ideas that draw upon creating better support for students outside of the classroom - our classes totatl 5 hours of instruction per week (funding....) ! We hope to get a great cross-sectioon of "best practice" ideas to be put into direct use with our programs! In terms of the pattern of student needs - we are seeing a younger and younger population arrive at our door - although I must mention that we have 2 60+year old men enrolled now too! - and we are seeing very low math assessments 4-6th grade levels!! Fundamental reading skills are good, though comprehension and problem-solving continues to be a challenge for many students as well.

I am extremely busy with multiple literacy programs (from womb to tomb), so I may not respond on a daily basis to this network, please excuse.
