smart kids! safe kids! Injury Prevention Program

Smart Kids posterUnintentional injury is the leading cause of death for children three to five years old. And each year between 20-25 percent of all children sustain an injury sufficiently severe to require medical attention, missed school, and/or bed rest. The Smart Kids! Safe Kids! Injury Prevention Program was developed by the Seattle Fire Department and King County Emergency Medical Services to target the main injury categories relevant to three to five year old children.

The Smart Kids! Safe Kids! Preschool Safety Program targets four of the main injury categories relevant to three to five year old children.

The topics are

  1. burn and scald prevention,
  2. poisoning prevention,
  3. head injury prevention through the use of helmets, and
  4. pedestrian safety.

Don't worry that children never listen to you; worry that they are always watching you.

Each of these units provides the child with a concrete skill that can be used to help keep the child safe. The curriculum includes hands on activities, story cards, lesson plans and classroom ideas for teachers to use when teaching these important skills to their preschoolers. Additionally, a tool for checking the child's understanding is included for each unit.

Preschool teachers in Seattle can obtain a free copy of the Smart Kids!

Safe Kids! Injury Prevention Curriculum by hosting a 45 minute teacher training taught by Seattle Fire Department Education staff. If you are interested in learning more about this program, please visit the Seattle Fire Department webpage: www.seattle.gov/fire/pubEd/preschool.
