Flathead Community of Resource Educators (CORE)  Trunk Workshop

What: Preview and explore trunks and footlockers available through Glacier National Park and other Flathead region resource educators. Typical trunks and footlockers highlighted include: forest stewardship, fire ecology, birds, amphibians, bears, wolves, American Indian art, and much more.
Who: Flathead CORE (Community of Resource Educators)
When: August 18, 2008, 9 - 3:30 p.m.
Where: Flathead National Forest Supervisor's Office, 650 Wolfpack Way, Kalispell, MT (near Glacier High School).

Glacier 101

What: This half-day session for educators will present the basics about national parks, as well as the unique cultural and natural resources protected in Glacier National Park. Participants will be shown lessons and techniques for integrating information about Glacier into their lesson plans. There will be free posters, books, games, lessons, and other prizes for participants.
Who: Laura Law, Education Specialist, Glacier National Park
When: Aug. 21, 2008, 8:30a.m.-11:30a.m.
Where: Earl Bennett Building, near the County Superintendent's Office in Kalispell
Cost: Free!

Glacier Education Trunks Brought to Your School!

What: Glacier's Education Specialist will come to your school with one of the park's education trunks - bear, wolf, FireWorks, Songbird, or Skulls Kit- and guide teachers through the materials, background information and lesson plans to help make using the trunks a snap.
Who: Laura Law, Glacier Education Specialist
When: For 3 hours after school or as part of a PIR day, to be arranged at least 1 month in advance with Glacier's Education Specialist, Laura Law.
Where: At your school.
Cost: Free!

Science and History Day

What: Join Waterton Lakes and Glacier National Park researchers to learn about the status of their scientific studies in the two parks. 
Who: Crown of the Continent Research Learning Center.
When: Occurs annually during the 4th week in July, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
Where: Lake McDonald Lodge, Glacier National Park in 2007 and Bayshore Inn Conference Centre Waterton Lakes National Park, Canada in 2008. (Location rotates between Canada and U.S. every other year). It will be in U.S. in 2009.
Cost: Free!

Glacier Field Trip Workshops

What: Full day workshops focus on preparing school groups for field trips to the west side of the park. However, many of the concepts and activities are also used for field trip classes who visit the east side of the park.
Who: Laura Law, Glacier Educaiton Specialist and Interpretive Park Rangers
When: Exact dates for workshops vary from year to year and are determined depending on demand so contact Laura if you are interested.
Where: West Glacier area
Cost: Free!
OPI Renewal Units: 4-6 depending on field trip option.

Past Workshops Include:

  • Fire Ecology- Learn how to prepare your students for a field trip to Glacier to learn about fire in the forest (grades 4th-8th).
  • Habitats, Wildlife, & Senses - Show your Kindergarten - 2nd grade students how observations are made with senses and that all living things need a habitat to survive (grades K-2).
  • Earth Science Hike - Travel up to Avalanche Lake and learn points of interest along the way that bring to life for your students concepts such as erosion, weathering, glaciation, fossils, and more (grades 5th-12th).

Throughout the year, the Glacier Institute, our education program partner, offers numerous programs that provide university credits and/or Office of Public Instruction renewal units for teachers.
