Hi, Jackie -

I am just about to leave but want to quickly reply to one piece of your
email below and that regards finding political cartoons that are outside the
realm of context for teachers.  Yes, it is possible.  There are sites (like
cagle.com) that have international cartoons - you can choose by country or
topic.  
I think it might be a workable idea.  One way I would end the activity - for
an assessment piece - would be to have the students visit each others'
cartoons and see if they can decipher meaning.  Maybe some studens are
naturally better at it and maybe some students are naturally better at
drawing the cartoons themselves.  Just a thought.
