These heritage resources hold clues to past ecosystems, add richness and depth to our landscapes, provide links to living traditions, and help transform a beautiful walk in the woods into an unforgettable encounter with history. - National Heritage Strategy, 1998.

The cultural and natural heritage assets of the Rocky Mountain Region include some of the "Crown Jewels" of the entire National Forest system. The Rocky Mountain Region has many of the earliest, largest, best known, most exotic, and most interesting historic, prehistoric, and paleontological resources in the nation.

Purpose of the Heritage Program:

To protect significant heritage resources, to share their values with the American people,and to contribute relevant information and perspectives to natural resource management.

In so doing we will:

• Ensure that future generations will have an opportunity to discover the human story etched on the landscapes of our national forests and grasslands;
• Make the past come alive as a vibrant part of our recreational experiences and community life; and
• Connect people to the land in a way that will help us better understand and manage forest ecosystems.

Heritage Tourism

Heritage Tourism is about traveling to natural, historic, and cultural attractions to have fun while learning about the past. These tourism activities focus on historical authenticity, long-term sustainability, and local involvement. They introduce the visitor to authentic places that make history come alive, and events that give indidviduals the opportunity to experience life as it used to be. Heritage Tourism maintains a balance between tourism and the preservation of history and the built environment. By visiting heritage sites, visitors assist the local community in preserving these resources for the enjoyment of future generations.
