Your child and HIV. A resource to support parents/guardians in caring for their children.

Goode M; Australasian Society for HIV Medicine. Conference.

Annu Conf Australas Soc HIV Med. 1999 Dec 9-11; 11: 55 (abstract no. OR29).

Paediatric HIV Service, Sydney Children's Hospital, Randwick, NSW.

The majority of information on HIV currently available in Australia relate to adults living with HIV/AIDS. But children and families living with HIV/AIDS often face very different stumbling blocks. These families live with a multigenerational disease where at least one other person and in some cases all members of the family are infected. In addition, children living with HIV/AIDS require developmentally appropriate, child and family focused support. In order to assist parents/guardians in the care and support of their children, a booklet was developed by our service. Children and their parents assisted by drawing pictures and providing input. To highlight some of the particular differences experienced by many families, a cross section of 20 families will be described. This information will include the number of infected and affected children who have lost one or both parents and the number who experience difficulty in adhering to treatment. In addition it highlights the amount of difficulty parents have in supporting their children through procedures and the disclosure issues experienced by children and parents. The specific problems experienced by these families were identified and used as a basis in the development of what we hope will be a useful resource for families in Australia living with HIV/AIDS.
