GOVERNOR COMMEMORATES 65TH ANNIVERSARY OF BATTLE OF MIDWAY

June 4 - The battle serves as a reminder "not to take anything for granted — not our life, not freedom, not natural beauty," Governor Lingle said as she commemorated the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Midway.  At the ceremony, held on Midway atoll, the Governor was joined by U.S. Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne and World War II veterans, including several who fought in the Battle of Midway.

The Battle of Midway was fought over and near Midway atoll from June 4-7, 1942.  It is considered by many historians to be the turning point of the War in the Pacific, and marked a shift in Naval power, from Japan to the United States.

"Midway tested the courage, the ingenuity, and the perseverance of the American people perhaps as never before and never since; and through the heroism of extraordinary young men and the grace of God, victory was ours," Secretary Kempthorne said during his keynote remarks.
