U.S. HORTICULTURAL EXPORTS TO CANADA CONTINUE AT A RECORD PACE

U.S. horticultural product sales to Canada are running at a record pace, up nearly 8 percent this fiscal year from the same period a year ago, valued at $2.6 billion for the 10-month period. Worldwide, U.S. sales to Canada, the European Union and Mexico are almost making up for lower U.S. exports of horticultural products to Japan and other Asian destinations. So far this fiscal year (October-July), total U.S. horticultural exports are running about 1 percent behind last year’s record value.

For Canada, fresh and processed vegetables are showing the largest value gains in the current year. Total sales to Canada reached a record $2.87 billion in FY 1997, 10 percent above the previous year and 27 percent higher than in FY 1992. Further, the United States ran a $1.6 billion trade surplus with Canada in horticultural products last year. Canada is the largest U.S. horticultural export market, accounting for more than one-fourth of total U.S. exports. For many products, exports to Canada account for nearly 40 percent or more of total U.S. exports. These include broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, celery, lettuce, onions, peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, blueberries, grapes, kiwi fruit, melons, peaches, nectarines, strawberries, orange juice, tomato paste and sauce, and nursery products.
