GOVERNOR, INTERIM PUBLIC SAFETY DIRECTOR PROMOTE CREATIVE WRITING PROGRAM AT WOMEN'S CORRECTIONAL FACILITY

September 7 - Governor Lingle and Interim Public Safety Director Clayton Frank visited the Women's Community Correctional Center to recognize inmates who contributed to Hulihia III, a book that features their writing and artwork.

The Governor encouraged the inmates to apply their creative writing skills to their futures and build upon their knowledge.  "I believe each and every one of you has the ability to be successful when you rejoin the community," the Governor said to applause from the inmates.

Hulihia III is the third in a series of books that have been published as part of a creative writing class for inmates.  With the assistance of retired teacher Pat Clough, the Department of Public Safety began the project in 2004.  Since that time, 150 inmates have attended classes.

"When society closed a door, Hulihia opened the window," one of the inmates said of the program in her creative writing piece.

This edition includes for the first time writings by male inmates who participated in the creative writing classes at Waiawa and O`ahu Community Correctional Facilities.
