GOVERNOR PROMOTES PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND NUTRITION AT HEALTH SUMMIT

October 2 - Governor Lingle encouraged delegates to the Department of Health's 2007 Physical Activity and Nutrition Summit to "turn ideas into action and 'just get moving,'" as part of her Administration's commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles among Hawai`i residents.

"No matter what the state does, or what employers do, or what community organizations do, it comes down to personal responsibility," she said. "We have to take the initiative and make the right choices.  If people had healthier lifestyles, there would be less illness, less disease and less dependence on the "sick" care system.

The summit brought together representatives from businesses, schools and community agencies to showcase best practices in physical activity and nutrition in Hawai`i and in the nation.  It also provided an opportunity to highlight the new Statewide Physical Activity and Nutrition Plan, which was launched in October to prevent rising rates of obesity and chronic diseases across the state.
