HAWAI`I WELCOMES NEWEST SAFEWAY

As part of the Lingle-Aiona Administration's ongoing work to expand business opportunities within the State of Hawai`i, Governor Lingle attended the grand opening of Safeway's newest store.

"The addition of a new Safeway store is a great thing for consumers," said Governor Lingle.  "Increased competition means more choices and better service."

Governor Lingle also shared her appreciation for Safeway's generosity within the community.  During the grand opening ceremony, Safeway Vice President of Public Affairs Brian Dowling announced that Safeway would donate $10,000 to the Kapi`olani Medical Center for Women and Children, Waikiki Health Center and Imi Hale (a Native Hawaiian cancer prevention program).

The opening of the new Safeway store will be a boost to the local economy because many products are from Hawai`i, including 20 percent of the produce and 50 percent of flowers. The store also provides employment to approximately 300 people.
