GOVERNOR LINGLE RELEASES $4,450,000 FOR SMALL BOAT HARBORS ON THE BIG ISLAND AND O‘AHU

For Immediate Release:  December 26, 2007

HONOLULU – Governor Lingle has released $4,450,000 for small boat harbor improvements on the Big Island and O‘ahu.

“Over the past five years, the Department of Land and Natural Resources has been working hard to improve our state’s small boat harbors,” said Governor Lingle. “These funds will allow for repairs and enhancements to harbors on the Big Island and O‘ahu so that more residents and commercial harbor users can enjoy safe and easy access to the ocean.”

KAWAIHAE SMALL BOAT HARBOR – BIG ISLAND
$400,000 will be used to replace existing loading docks that have deteriorated beyond repair. The new loading docks and connecting walkways will meet Americans with Disabilities Act guidelines and provide safe facilities for the many commercial and recreational boaters who use the harbor. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2008 and be completed in March 2009.

KE‘EHI SMALL BOAT HARBOR – O‘AHU
$4,050,000 will be used to replace Piers 100 and 200. Currently, more than one quarter of the 362 slips at Ke‘ehi Small Boat Harbor have been deemed unusable due to extensive deterioration over the years. This project will make slips available that have been closed due to safety concerns, restore harbor activity and generate more revenues for future maintenance.

Design is ongoing and scheduled to be completed in January 2008. Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2008 and be completed in December 2009.
