UNEMPLOYMENT INSURANCE WEEKLY CLAIMS REPORT SEASONALLY ADJUSTED DATA In the week ending Oct. 5, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 384,000, a decrease of 40,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 424,000. The 4-week moving average was 412,250, a decrease of 12,250 from the previous week's revised average of 424,500. The advance seasonally adjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.8 percent for the week ending Sept. 28, a decrease of 0.1 percentage point from the prior week's unrevised rate of 2.9 percent. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment
during the week ending Sept. 28 was 3,638,000, a decrease
of 15,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 3,653,000. The 4-week
moving average was 3,631,000, an increase of 23,250 from the preceding
week's revised average of 3,607,750. UNADJUSTED DATA The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 360,690 in the week ending Oct. 5, an increase of 41,556 from the previous week. There were 441,752 initial claims in the comparable week in 2001. The advance unadjusted insured unemployment rate was 2.3 percent during the week ending Sept. 28, unchanged from the prior week. The advance unadjusted number for persons claiming UI benefits in state programs totaled 2,975,982, a decrease of 16,029 from the preceding week. A year earlier, the rate was 2.2 percent and the volume was 2,796,351. Extended benefits were available in Oregon and Washington during the week ending Sept. 21. 53 states reported that 915,449 individuals filed continued claims under the Federal Temporary Extended Unemployment Compensation (TEUC) program during the week ending Sept. 21. Initial claims for UI benefits by former Federal civilian employees totaled 1,437 in the week ending Sept. 28, an increase of 6 from the prior week. There were 1,421 initial claims by newly discharged veterans, a decrease of 32 from the preceding week. There were 18,718 former Federal civilian employees claiming UI benefits for the week ending Sept. 21, an increase of 824 from the previous week. Newly discharged veterans claiming benefits totaled 16,967, an increase of 598 from the prior week. The highest insured unemployment rates in the week ending Sept. 21 were in Puerto Rico (5.7 percent), Alaska (3.6), Oregon (3.5), Washington (3.4), California (3.3), Pennsylvania (3.1), New Jersey (3.0), Massachusetts (2.9), Arkansas (2.7), and Connecticut (2.7). The largest increases in initial claims for the week ending Sept. 28 were in South Carolina (+2,186), Arkansas (+1,764), Iowa (+1,646), Virginia (+1,219), and Michigan (+1,216), while the largest decreases were in Ohio (-1,710), Tennessee (-1,527), Delaware (-1,148), California (-695), and New York (-693).
