Subject: PLANT SHUTDOWN DUE TO FEEDWATER HEATER TUBE LEAKAGE

Discussion:

At 9:30 p.m. on September 29, 2000, Entergy Nuclear Generation Company
commenced a normal shutdown of the Pilgrim reactor. The main generator
was taken off-line at 10:32 p.m. on September 30. At this time, the
plant is in cold shutdown.

The plant shutdown commenced after a leak was identified in the "A" fifth
point feedwater heater. A licensee system engineer identified an
increase in the mismatch between feedwater and condensate flow. The
licensee decided to shutdown the plant due to concerns of further
degradation of the feedwater heater and potential moisture carryover into
the main turbine.

The licensee expects the forced outage to last a few days, during which
an examination and repair of the fifth point feedwater heater will be
performed.

The resident staff is monitoring the licensee's shutdown and outage
activities. The licensee notified state and local agencies of the
shutdown on October 2, 2000; they do not plan on issuing a press release.
