NIOSH Occupational Energy Research Program

Background

NIOSH-Occupational Energy Research Program (OERP)

Energy-related health studies and public health activities are conducted by the National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Department of Energy and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Jointly, DOE and HHS maintain the Agenda for HHS Public Health Activities (for Fiscal Years 2005–2010) at Department of Energy Sites (http://www.cdc.gov/niosh/oerp/pdfs/hhsdoe_2005-2010.pdf). This agenda provides background for proposed HHS activities, including the Occupational Energy Research Program (OERP) conducted by NIOSH with funding from DOE.

This website presents an overview of the occupational research conducted by NIOSH under the OERP. The reader will find information addressing studies conducted internally by NIOSH staff and studies conducted externally through NIOSH-supported contracts, grants, and cooperative agreements. The information on this website is current as of October 2006.

The DOE Office of Health Studies (EH-51) serves as the primary DOE liaison to NIOSH. This office also oversees the DOE worker surveillance cooperative agreement projects.
