THREE RIVERS, Texas -- Valero Three Rivers Refinery in Three Rivers has earned recertification membership in the prestigious "Star" Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) of the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). A recognition ceremony was held today at the company's Three Rivers' facility. "Valero has demonstrated excellence in effective safety and health management," said Frank Strasheim, OSHA's acting regional administrator in Dallas. "The outstanding effort includes maintaining an injury and illness rate that is 33 percent below the national average for this particular industry." Valero Three Rivers Refinery processes about 98,000 barrels of feedstock per day. The feedstock is processed into products, including gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, liquefied petroleum gases, propylene, kerosene and sulfur. The company employs about 295 employees with an additional 140 contract workers on-site. Valero Three Rivers Refinery is owned by Valero Energy Corp., based in San Antonio. The VPP recognizes and promotes effective workplace safety and health management. About 1,400 workplaces throughout the U.S., representing 280 industries, have earned OSHA's highest recognition as participants in the VPP. Program participants typically achieve injury and illness rates lower than average rates for their respective industry. Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, employers are responsible for providing a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA's role is to assure the safety and health of America's working men and women by setting and enforcing standards; providing training, outreach and education; establishing partnerships; and encouraging continual process improvement in workplace safety and health.
