Timothy Rieger first served his country in the 1980s as a Marine assigned to various overseas duty stations. He stayed in the Marine Reserve and was called to active duty after the 9/11 attacks in Operation Noble Eagle, performing security missions stateside. As a member of the Army National Guard deployed to Afghanistan in 2004, he used his law school training as a JAG officer. He traveled throughout the country, doing national security assessments on behalf of the Afghans and investigating the bombing of a village by U.S. forces. Rieger bluntly points out the missing impulse in many quarters of our society to selflessly serve this country.
