Big Bend National Park was authorized by Congress in 1935 and formally established on June 12, 1944, to preserve and protect a representative area of the Chihuahuan Desert along the Rio Grande for the benefit and enjoyment of present and future generations. The park includes rich biological and geological diversity, cultural history, recreational resources, and outstanding opportunities for bi-national protection of our shared natural and cultural heritage.
This press kit is designed to assist journalists and others with general park information, statistics and other background materials about Big Bend National Park.

Did You Know?
Common in Big Bend National Park, the Southwestern Earless Lizard has no external ear openings and is often referred to as the lizard with the pink shirt and green pants.
