This week, the Legislature will wrap up its 2006 session.  Now more than ever, we need the public’s support to ensure key legislation gets passed.

In particular, we are focused on a comprehensive strategy to promote energy self-sufficiency and reduce Hawai`i’s dependency on oil.

We also want to provide tax relief to help offset the rising cost of living.

To address the homelessness problem, we have proposed $20 million to repair existing shelters and provide supportive social services.

We also need the public’s support on initiatives to allocate more funding for charter schools, environmental protection, and preparation for natural disasters and emergencies.

I am proud of the collaborative effort between our Administration and the Legislature in developing meaningful legislation to help improve the lives of all Hawai`i residents.

With just a few days remaining before the Legislature adjourns on May 4, we need everyone’s involvement to ensure we achieve these important goals.

Mahalo.  This is Governor Linda Lingle.
