November 8, 2007 - Preserving Inter-Island Ferry Service and Protecting the Environment

Click here to listen to this address.

I recently signed a bill allowing an inter-island ferry service to operate while the state conducts an environmental review. Based on input I received from a broad range of groups and individuals, I established over 40 conditions designed to minimize the impact of the ferry's operation on the environment.

These actions will preserve an important inter-island transportation alternative  while protecting our natural and cultural resources.  We'll conduct a rapid risk assessment during the first few months of the ferry's operation to determine whether to amend those conditions.

I want to commend the bipartisan effort of the Legislature to pass this law. I also want to thank all the citizens who took the time to contact lawmakers and testified in person to make their voices heard on this important issue.
