"As our keiki return to school, I want to remind everyone to pay close attention to pedestrians on our roads.

Whether you are driving or walking your kids to school, we all need to do our part to watch out for pedestrians, especially in school zones and near playgrounds.

Under a new crosswalk law, motorists who fail to stop for a pedestrian in a crosswalk will face a $150 fine for the first offense; a $300 fine and three-month license revocation for the second offense; and a $1,000 fine and six-month license revocation for the third violation.

Pedestrians who jaywalk, do not use a crosswalk, or disobey the "Don't Walk" signal will be fined $100.

Remember, pedestrian safety is a responsibility we all share."
