"Each Earth Day, observed on April 22nd, people around the
world renew efforts to protect our planet for future generations.
As part of my Administration's ongoing efforts to preserve what is special
about Hawai`i, we are promoting greater energy efficiency and renewable
energy development, controlling invasive species and protecting our oceans
and `aina.
The designation to protect the pristine Papahanaumokuakea Marine National
Monument is just one example. The Department of Land and Natural
Resources also established the Mauka-Makai Watch program to focus attention
and action on resource monitoring and conservation.
Additionally, we've increased enforcement of environmental laws, and made
needed improvements to state parks.
Working together, we can continue our important mission of resource
management, enhancement and protection of our fragile environment."
