Hawai`i's rich cultural diversity and strategic geographical location make us the perfect bridge between East and West.  This position allows us to be a global leader in many areas and build stronger relationships in our region of the world.

This week, Hawai`i is leading discussions in the critical area of regional security by hosting the 2007 Asia-Pacific Homeland Security Summit and Exposition.

I have the privilege of welcoming to our state experts from the United States mainland, Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Japan, India and Taiwan who will address issues of terrorism in the Asia-Pacific region, the rapidly changing security technologies, and the unique challenges of keeping our oceans safe.

Thanks to the Summit, Hawai`i will continue to serve as a leader in promoting regional security in what is truly the Asia-Pacific Century.
