PubMed, a service of the National Library of Medicine includes over 16 million citations from MEDLINE and other life science journals for biomedical articles back to the 1950s. PubMed includes links to full text articles and other related resources.

Provides one-click, pre-formulated searches of PubMed for selected Healthy People 2010 focus areas. Topics include maternal, infant and child health, immunization and infectious diseases, injury and violence prevention, and many others.

Not currently affiliated with a university? Several of the links on HealthLinks are marked with a lock symbol (lock) symbol, which means that non-affiliated individuals cannot use them. Don’t let that dissuade you from using the website; there are still find many worthwhile resources on HealthLinks that are not restricted.

If you are planning to search PubMed, use the link on HealthLinks to connect. You will find that when you run a search there, the results will indicate the number of citations that are “UW Available.” If you go to the “Display” drop down menu just above the UW Availability tab and select “Citation”, you can browse your results in abstract form and see if they are available online through UW, the publisher, and/or PubMed Central (PubMed’s open access/free e-journals).

  • Canary Database
    Contains studies in the biomedical literature that explore the use of wildlife, domestic, and companion animals as "sentinels" for the effects of chemical, biological, and physical hazards in the environment that may be a risk to human health.”

  • Cochrane Library
    Consists of a regularly updated collection of evidence-based medicine databases. Access to full text is restricted to those affiliated with the UW Health Sciences Libraries. UW affiliates must be logged in to HealthLinks to access Cochrane Library.

  • Cochrane Health Promotion and Public Health Field: Cochrane reviews (and protocols) of relevance to health promotion and public health
    Promotes the production and use of systematic reviews of effectiveness of health promotion and public health interventions, and directs individuals to other sources of systematic reviews when topics have not been covered in the Cochrane Library.

  • Environmental Protection Agency: Alphabetical List of Databases and Software

  • Health Services Research & Public Health Information Programs
    The National Library of Medicine’s link to collaborative projects, databases, training, outreach, and publications related to health services research and public health.

  • Medscape Public Health & Prevention
    Provides links to news, recent publications, CE opportunities, and conferences in the field of public health. Registration is required, but is simple and free.

  • National Library of Medicine Gateway
    Allows users  to search simultaneously in multiple retrieval systems at the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), including Medline/PubMed, Toxline, MedlinePlus, ClinicalTrials.gov, and DIRLINE Directory of Health Organizations.

  • Popline
    Database on reproductive health, providing more than 300,000 citations with abstracts to scientific articles, reports, books, and unpublished reports in the field of population, family planning, and related health issues.”

  • Population Index
    A reference tool to the world's population literature. It presents an annotated bibliography of recently published books, journal articles, working papers, and other materials on population topics.

  • Public Health Specialist Library
    The UK based National Library for Public Health replaces the Public Health Electronic Library (PHeL). The three priority areas currently addressed on the website are tobacco, obesity, and alcohol.

  • Science.gov
    Science.gov is a gateway to over 50 million pages of authoritative selected science information provided by U.S. government agencies, including research and development results. The advance search feature allows searchers to select and search across a wide range of government databases.

  • TOXNET
    A collection of databases on toxicology, hazardous chemicals, environmental health, and toxic releases.

  • Turning Research into Practice (TRIP) Database
    Provides access to the best evidence-based publications relevant to clinical practice. Access is restricted, but a free trial and/or three free searches are allowed.

  • Using PubMed in Public Health: An Introduction Manual (2004)
    Helps you to be a more effective PubMed searcher.

  • WHOLIS: World Health Organization Library Database
    WHOLIS indexes all WHO publications from 1948 to the present, and articles from WHO produced journals and technical documents from 1985 to the present.
