Rural Fire Assistance Program

The Rural Fire Assistance Program enhances the fire protection capabilities of rural fire departments by providing financial assistance to departments in communities near national wildlife refuges and waterfowl production areas. The Fish and Wildlife Service has granted many hundreds of thousands of dollars to Midwest departments since the program began in 2001. Fire departments meeting the eligibility requirements may receive awards of up to $20,000 in federal funds for acquisition of wildland fire fighting training, personal protective equipment (PPE), and/or essential communication equipment.
