U.S. EPA Names Jonathan Herrmann Director of
National Homeland Security Research Center
(Washington, D.C.—September27, 2006) Today Dr. George Gray, Assistant Administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Research and Development, named Jonathan Herrmann as Director of EPA’s National Homeland Security Research Center, which is headquartered in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Dr. Gray said, “Jonathan Herrmann is a diligent and determined leader in the federal government’s efforts to protect the nation’s built environment and our drinking water supply. His vision, keen management skills and technological acumen will serve the American people well as Mr. Herrmann and his team defend our drinking water—a resource that is vital to life itself—and carry out the other duties the lab has been charged with by President Bush. I’d also like to commend Andy Avel for his superb leadership and management of the lab over the past 20 months. Both Andy and Jon have been a strong team, vital to the ongoing success of the Center. It is a benefit to the Center that they will continue to represent a strong management team.”
U.S. EPA’s National Homeland Security Research Center manages, coordinates, and supports homeland security research and technical assistance efforts. This research develops the scientific foundations to prevent or manage threats. Efforts focus on developing methods to clean up contaminated buildings, protecting the nation’s drinking water supply, and improving techniques to assess risk.
Mr. Herrmann has been with the EPA since 1975, except for a brief time in the private sector in the early 1980's. He earned a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. He is a Registered Professional in Engineering in the State of Ohio and is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the American Academy of Environmental Engineers, and the American Water Works Association. Most recently, Mr. Herrmann served as the Acting Deputy Director for Management in NHSRC. As such, he was responsible for overseeing day-to-day research program execution including quality assurance and peer review, information security, funding and human capital, and product clearance.
EPA’s laboratories, research centers, and grantees are building the scientific foundation needed to support the Agency’s mission to safeguard human health and the environment.
