There are a number of educational opportunities available to the women here...all of which are very important. 1)Adult education (highschool completion) 2)Work experience 3)Parenting education 4)Lifeskills training A phenomenon that is quite prevelant is that while men who are incarcerated typically have had some sort of work experience or have knowledge of a trade/skill, many women dropped out of formal education early and began having children...not only were they ill-equipped for the task of raising children (themselves being quite young)...but due to a lack of education/work opportunitites...ill-equipped to navigate the world. Many women have a great deal of anxiety around "school". A beginning place in any of these education programs is to build self-esteem. Identify strengths and continuously build upon them. Connect the learning opportunities to real-life experience/workforce preparedness. Feel free to inquire further regarding specific curricula, etc...Best of Luck -----Original Message----- From: Ujwala Samant [mailto:lalumineuse@yahoo.com] Sent: Friday, October 17, 2003 7:11 AM To: Multiple recipients of list Subject: [NIFL-WOMENLIT:2749] Question on prison curriculum Dear everyone, A colleague in England is looking for models of education and curriculum modules used in women's prisons. He is part of a team developing curriculum and looking into what kinds of education is seen as valid, necessary and crucial to female prisoners. Any help, suggestions, curriculum, best practice studies would be very appreciated. Thanks very much, Ujwala Samant __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo!
