TIME IS RUNNING OUT TO SAVE ERIC (FRIDAY, MAY 9th DEADLINE)

Some of you may know about ERIC-for some of you this may be the first
time hearing about it. But it is important for all of us to know what
is about to happen to it...

ERIC serves as an electronic source of information related to
education. The Department of Education is proposing to significantly
curtail ERIC. Basically, it is proposing the following:

- Close all 16 ERIC Clearinghouses

- Eliminate personalized reference and referral services

- Terminate AskERIC and clearinghouse question-answering services

- End all networking and outreach activities, including
ERIC-sponsored electronic lists

- Eliminate ERIC Digests, books, and other synthesis
publications

- Reduce coverage of the journal literature from 1100
journals to an estimated 400

- Restrict consumer access to information, limiting ERIC database
coverage to "approved lists" of journals and document contributors

If you care about ERIC, I urge all of you to go to:

http://www.saveeric.org/letter.htm

and copy/paste the letter to congress. If you don't know contact
info. regarding your elected officials, you can go to:

http://www.vote-smart.org/

By the way, apparently faxes of letters written on
letterhead are most effective, but emails are also
welcome. If you do send an email, make sure that you
include your full snail mail address, or the message may be discarded.

THIS NEEDS TO BE DONE BEFORE MAY 9TH, 4 PM
