BLM and Forest Service Transportation Plan

The Gunnison Field Office of the BLM is working together with the Gunnison National Forest and the public to develop and update our transportation plan for the Gunnison Basin.  The goal of this plan will be to identify and manage a system of roads and trails which provides a variety of recreation experiences for the public, meets the needs of the agencies to manage the land and it's resources, minimizes negative impacts to other resources and is within our capability to manage and maintain.  The plan will make decisions about what routes will be open for use by motorized vehicles and mountain bikes, which uses will be allowed on each route and whether there are any restrictions on the seasons of use for each route.  The Plan will focus on use in the Spring, Summer and Fall.  Winter transportation decisions will be made in a separate process at a later date.

Since these are public lands and the public has a strong interest in how they are managed it is important that we get good input from the public as we formulate this plan.  We have held a variety of meetings to make interested parties aware of this planning process and explain how they can participate in the process.  The first opportunity for public participation is for the public to submit their initial ideas they would like us to consider by October 31st, 2006.  There will periodically be other opportunities to review and comment on the draft plan as we develop it.

A variety of information, maps and comment forms for this plan are available to you on the
Forest Service and BLM Travel Plan Webpage
