The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) might best be described as a small agency with a big mission and a lot of ground to cover. As the Nation’s largest land manager, the BLM is responsible for almost 260 million acres of public land—nearly one-eighth of all land in the United States—and 700 million acres of Federal subsurface mineral estate nationwide.
The BLM manages the land for a range of uses that is as broad as it is impressive. The BLM's mission is to sustain the health and productivity of the public lands for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations. The Bureau accomplishes this by managing such activities as outdoor recreation, livestock grazing, mineral development, and energy production, and by conserving natural, historical, cultural, and other resources on the public lands.
