Thank you host sites, organizers and visitors!

The 2008 Green Buildings Open House that took place last Saturday, October 4, was an unprecedented success! In a joint effort with the ASES National Solar Tour, thousands of homes were open across the country and over one hundred thousand visitors attended.

An informal survey by hosts in the Northeast suggests that many visitors were unaware of the affordability of many green and sustainable energy features and at least half of the visitors intend to add a sustainable energy feature of some kind to their homes within the next two years. This is great news for the homeowners, the green economy in the Northeast and the earth!

About the Green Buildings Open House

Part of the ASES National Solar Tour

Throughout the Northeast, homes and other buildings are taking advantage of clean renewable energy and other green building technologies. On Saturday, October 4th from 10am to 4pm, nearly six hundred buildings in the Northeast opened their doors to the public for the Green Buildings Open House. Visitors searched the NESEA listings to find sites in their communities. This self-guided tour was free and open to the public.

The event, which is part of the American Solar Energy Society's National Solar Tour, offers a unique opportunity for people to see first-hand how clean energy and green building practices can be put to work. Homeowners and building managers are on site to describe their green building and sustainable energy features and answer questions. Members of the public are able to learn basic principles of green building, such as designing for solar heating ("passive solar"), energy-efficient building techniques such as superinsulation and air sealing, safe indoor air quality, and resource-efficient and healthy building materials. Many of the buildings demonstrate how solar hot water is collected and stored, how photovoltaics can be placed on or integrated into the shell of a building to produce electricity, and how wind can be used to generate power. The Green Buildings Open House demystifies green buildings, proving that they are comfortable, affordable, and attractive. Informational materials will be available at all sites.

NESEA organizes the Green Buildings Open House in the six New England States, plus Delaware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.
