Secretary of State Colin L. Powell to Address Conference on Sustainable Development

Secretary of State Colin L. Powell will speak at 12:15 p.m., on Friday, July 12, 2002, at one-day conference entitled “Making Sustainable Development Work: Governance, Finance and Public-Private Cooperation”.  The conference, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State, is part of a continuing sustainable development dialogue involving the U.S. government that will bring together representatives from government, business, civil society and international financial institutions.  The conference will focus on the challenges of fostering good domestic governance and the key role of partnerships for implementing sustainable development.   

The conference will take place at the Meridian International Center, 1630 Crescent Place N.W., Washington, D.C.  The morning portion of the conference, including Secretary’s remarks, will be open to an invited press pool.  

Media Representatives are invited to view the morning portions of the conference and Secretary Powell’s remarks via live satellite feed at the Department of State press briefing room or the Foreign Press Center (529 14th St. N.W., Washington, D.C. 20045.)  Media representatives may do so upon presentation of either (1) a US Government-issued identification card (Department of State, White House, Congress, Department of Defense, or Foreign Press Center), (2) a photo ID issued by the employing media organization, or (3) a letter on official letterhead from their news organization verifying their employment as a journalist, accompanied by an official photo ID (driver’s license or passport).
