Prepared Remarks for Delivery by
U.S. Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao
Combined Federal Campaign Thank-You for OSHA
U.S. Department of Labor
Washington, D.C.
Monday, February 26, 2007

Thank you, Ed [Edwin Foulke, Assistant Secretary of OSHA], and good morning everyone!

Let's congratulate Ed Foulke and his Campaign Coordinators, Kathleen Stapleton and Ruth McCully, for yet another great job on the CFC.

OSHA should take special pride for receiving the highest CFC Award, the President's Award, for the fourth year in a row. By collecting over $120,000, OSHA exceeded its goal by 28 percent. You had an impressive participation rate of 66 percent and an amazing average per capita gift of $328. This year OSHA boasts 7 Double Eagle contributors and 35 Eagle contributors. They contribute 2 percent and 1 percent of their pay to the CFC.

It was efforts such as yours that qualified the Department for two very special awards: the Million Dollar Circle Award — for raising over $1 million — and the Summit Award — for achieving an increase of three percent over our 2005 CFC total. The Department leadership that worked so hard and the employees who contributed so generously all deserve hearty thanks.

As former President and CEO of the United Way of America, I know how much these campaigns mean in the real world. People throughout the nation and worldwide as well need our support. And there are literally thousands of worthy causes supported by the CFC.

Thanks in part to your goodness, these people — strangers you may never meet — can hope for a better life, and for a better future.

You are making a real, tangible difference when you contribute to a charity. I would like to thank all of you for your generosity, your dedication, and your willingness to be a star in someone's life.
