Diverse Missions, Diverse Employees
FAS is a small agency by U.S. Government standards, with approximately 1000 employees. FAS employees come from a wide range of backgrounds and experience. Because we have a broad range of missions and responsibilities in almost every country and region throughout the world, we need that diversity to get the job done.

FAS has two career tracks: the Civil Service, which is based at USDA headquarters in Washington, D.C.; and the Foreign Service, where officers spend as much as two-thirds of their careers overseas. Eligibility for the Foreign Service is limited to FAS employees with at least 18 months of service in the agency and other requisite skills and abilities.
