Under Secretary Josette Sheeran Shiner to Visit NorwayUnder Secretary of State Josette Sheeran Shiner will travel to Oslo on May 16, 2006 to meet with Norwegian Prime Minister Stoltenberg to advance strategies on UN effectiveness and reform in the areas of development, humanitarian assistance and the environment. Under Secretary Sheeran Shiner is on a high level UN panel addressing these issues which PM Stoltenberg co-chairs.
"The United States and Norway have a long history of partnership in supporting the United Nations. From its founding when Norway’s Trygve Lie, who became the first official Secretary General of the UN, worked closely with the United States to establish its operating principles and build the UN in its current New York City location, to meeting today’s difficult humanitarian and development challenges, we share many common goals," said Under Secretary Sheeran Shiner. "I came to Norway today to work with Prime Minister Stoltenberg to find ways to enhance the UN as an institution of trust so it can most effectively help the millions of people who depend upon its services to better their lives."
Under Secretary Sheeran Shiner will also meet with other Norwegian government and private sector leaders to deepen and broaden our partnership on a range of key economic issues, including development assistance, trade, and global energy security.
"As the world’s third largest energy exporter, Norway is a critical participant in our discussions about energy security," said Under Secretary Sheeran Shiner. "I am here to listen and learn and I look forward to a constructive dialogue.
