The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages has its
‘National Standards for Foreign Language Education’ online at
http://www.actfl.org/index.cfm?weburl=/public/articles/details.cfm?id=33.
The standards consists of the 5C’s. These are communication, cultures,
communities, comparisons, and connections.

Who needs these 5C’s? Language students who are learning a foreign
language as a skill to use in a future occupation need to know and learn
to use these 5C’s. Many of these students are occupational Spanish
students who will be specializing in medical Spanish. And, they are
they ones who will become the interpreters and translators of health
information. And, they might also become the future medical librarians
who are developing health information for the Spanish speaking
population in their communities. And, these students might also be
developing these 5C language skills for other languages.

An example of foreign language students using the 5C’s and medical
Spanish is at the department of Spanish of the University of Texas.
Last year students in Dr Orlando Kelm worked in clinics and in the class
they learned how to write the lessons and exercises for textbooks
pertaining to Spanish for health care workers.

These medical Spanish students have Dr Kelms home page as a reference.
